The kingdom of Lexus’ premium luxury is now in the hands of fifth-generation royalty. Lexus has introduced the latest representation of its finest qualities – the first generation of the LS flagship sedan – at the 2017 North American International Auto Show.
Just like the original LS premium sedan, the fifth-gen 2018 Lexus LS flagship challenges the norm not only with its exquisite design but also by offering whole new levels of interior values and performance elements. In short, the fifth-gen flagship sedan raises the bar on what a luxury vehicle should be.
Making all of these possible is Lexus’ all-new global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA–L), which was first seen on the new generation 2017 Lexus LC 500 coupe. During the development of the LC 500, the Japanese premium carmaker made sure that is not just about creating a new coupe, and is building the start of a new phase for the brand, reflecting the shift in terms of design principles and the engineering methods.
Primary to these is the GA-L platform, which has been chosen to underpin the king of luxury among Lexus’ offerings. Simply put, the GA-L allowed Lexus to re-imagine its flagship luxury sedan.
Lexus’ GA-L platform made it possible for the next-gen LS to become longer and lower than the previous generation of the flagship sedan. This rear-wheel drive platform also allowed Lexus to give the LS sedan a coupe-like silhouette, a stunning design and performance level that doesn’t leave the driver behind.
The new platform features a lower profile and length that is on par with a long-wheelbase sedan, paving the way for the next-gen LS to sit 0.6 inches lower, with its hood and trunk now lower by around 1.2 inches and 1.6 inches, respectively. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials – like ultra-high tensile steel sheet and aluminum – Lexus was able to make the next LS platform and body over 200 lbs lighter than its predecessor.
Standard and optional safety features for the next-gen LS sedan include the Lexus Safety System + and the Advanced Safety Package that features Intuitive Pedestrian Detection with Active Steering.
