Edward Whitacre, the 67 year old ex-CEO of AT&T has been tasked to bring the new GM back on track when it comes out of bankruptcy. Whitacre, who retired from the telecommunications giant in 2007 leaving behind an outstanding record of service, has recently been coaxed to come out of retirement to deal with General Motors. In an interview, Whitacre admitted that he knew nothing about cars but was willing to learn adding further that the business principles is essentially the same for all businesses. It was the US treasury department who "tempted" the 67-year-old to come out of retirement to help GM. Whitacre will assume his position by August 31. In the meantime, the management of GM falls into the hands of the interim chairman Kent Kresa.
