Trials are ongoing for the electric powered version of the Mercedes-Benz Vito van to test its suitability for use as part of London's black taxi fleet. The prototype was developed by Eco City in partnership with Penso, Mercedes Benz UK and Zytek Automotive. Eco City is best known for selling and servicing cabs. Peter DaCosta, the head of Eco City, said that the eVito is the first all-electric, wheelchair accessible taxi with a 25-foot turning circle to be launched in the world and a major step towards its goal to become a leading supplier of niche eco-friendly vehicles. Currently, about 30% of new black cab sales are of Vito vans. The Vito is powered by Zytek's 70kW electric powertrain and it is expected to exceed a total range of 120 miles in typical usage. The rating of the Vito van is said to be similar to a traditional black cab's. DaCosta added that after successful trials, the eVito together with the Vito taxi, will give London a great opportunity to reduce air pollution with modern vehicles. [via autocar]
