Engineer arrested on suspicion of stealing Ford secrets could face new charges
Ford Motor Co. will not take the theft of trade secrets lightly especially now that the culprit was found to have even more data on his computer. According to US prosecutors, Xiang Dong Yu, who had been arrested on suspicion of stealing Ford trade secrets will likely face additional charges.
The arrest was made at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport from China on charges that he stole thousands of documents detailing Ford designs that are reportedly worth millions of dollars. Court papers filed in Michigan last week indicate that prosecutors claimed that FBI agents seized a laptop Yu had when he arrived and discovered more Ford trade-secret design documents as well as confidential documents from a company they did not identify. Yu, who had permanent resident status in the United States, has been held in prison without bail since his arrest on five felony counts. Prosecutors had asked the court not to release him because they feared he would try to return to China, which doesn’t have an extradition treaty with the US.
