Recruitment was one of its goals at the Detroit Auto Show, according to Kathryn Blackwell, the NAFTA region vice president of communications for Continental Automotive Systems. She said that networking was being done on the show floor for the purpose of hiring more people. Continental is seeking to fill 150 positions. In 2009, the auto industry was left unstable due to the economic crisis and this made many engineers from suppliers such as Continental to decide to move to other companies.
Santosh Anishetty, the head of passive safety and advanced driver assistance systems for Continental, said that there are many factors on why the engineers choose not to work for auto suppliers. Anishetty explained that the most in-demand is a quality engineer with 8 or 10 years of experience.
Neil De Koker, the CEO of the Original Equipment Suppliers Association, which represents auto suppliers, said that the over 300,000 U.S. jobs cut during the industry downturn forced talented engineers to go somewhere else. De Koker said that the bottom line is the “sense of security” that the suppliers lost when the technically qualified people moved elsewhere in the industry. [source: Autonews]
