Chevrolet says the 2011 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid would start selling very soon as the Environmental Protection Agency has already determined the gasoline mileage figures. To calculate such figures, the EPA developed a new mileage rating method for plug-in hybrids and electric that does not distinguish between city and highway fuel economy. The Volt recently got three mileage ratings from the EPA: -- Powered only by the 1.4-liter gasoline engine: 37 mpg – On only electricity: the equivalent of 93 mpg. – Running on a combination of gasoline and electricity: the equivalent of 60 mpg. The EPA says the Volt has a 35-mile range on electricity alone and a range of 379 miles with gasoline and electricity. The Volt is meant to travel on low-cost electricity until such time that the battery is depleted. When it gets to this point, the range is extended with the use of the gasoline engine.
