EU planning to launch new electric cars project

The European Union is preparing to launch a new major project that supports the growth of electric cars, according to Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Spain‚ prime minister and the head of the EU.
Zapatero disclosed that he met with a group of firms recently that comprised some of the most important in Europe. He came out of the meeting, saying that he felt it was ‚Äúfundamental that there should be cooperation and integration of efforts in developing the electric vehicle.‚Äù Zapatero added that there‚ a need in Europe to have a regulatory framework to provide financial support, as well as to have common standards on the technologies. He also mentioned the strides made in China and Japan to develop electric vehicles and their batteries. The project will be launched at a meeting of EU industry ministers in the Spanish city of San Sebastian on Feb. 8.
