Ferrari 599 GTB Hybrid coming to Geneva

Ferrari's first road-going hybrid will be shown next March at the Geneva Motor Show, according to a report by Italian publication Quattroroute. The Ferrari hybrid is based on the 599 GTB and is expected to use a derivative of the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) applied on its Formula One cars during part of the 2009 season. A lithium ion battery pack will be used on both the KERS setup and the concept.
Looking at this diagram, we see that the road car will have the battery and the power electronics mounted on either side of the rear transaxle. An electric motor is incorporated into the transaxle itself. If the road car had been patterned close to the racecar, this means that what would be displayed would be a mild hybrid system that provides automatic start-stop, regenerative braking and electric boost.
From the size of the battery, we can conclude that Ferrari won't offer any pure electric propulsion. With this system, it is expected that urban driving mileage is boosted by more than 30% from the current 8.7 mpg (US) to 13.8 mpg.
