If you’ve been complaining about the difficulty in getting out of a low-slung sportscar, then you’ll be glad to know that Ferrari has invented a new kind of door that improves passenger and driver access to its cars.

A patent application has been filed for a door that includes part of the front wing and hinges upward, so that when it’s opened the occupant can place their foot directly behind the front wheel. The design is especially suited for mid-engined cars but it’s suitable as well for front, mid or rear-engined cars. Ferrari claims that compared to gullwing doors, the system is easier and more cost-effective to make. Photo gallery after the jump!
