Chrysler is considering building the Fiat 500 at its Toluca, Mexico plant, according to a Wall Street Journal report, which cited anonymous sources. The engines for the vehicle will be built at the Trenton, Michigan plant. The decision on the compact car for the U.S. based on the 500 has yet to be made, according to the sources. Chrysler spokesman Gualberto Ranieri declined to comment on the issue. As part of its plans to win the US government's support in purchasing a stake in Chrysler, Fiat said it would bring the Fiat 500, along with other Alfa Romeo and Fiat-branded small cars, to the US market. Earlier this year, Fiat won a 20% stake in Chrysler. Fiat has kept a reputation of poor quality so by building the 500 in the US, the compact car is being geared to be more successful than a Fiat-branded version. Chrysler's Toluca plant currently produces the PT Cruiser and the Dodge Journey, employing more than 2,100 workers organized under a Mexican union.
