Fiat moving Panda production to Italy from Poland

Fiat S.p.A. is considering whether to transfer production of the Panda, Europe's best-selling minicar, to Italy from Poland starting in 2011. The relocation will help Fiat meet an Italian government request to raise domestic passenger car production by 50% to about 900,000 units a year. Currently, the Panda is being built at Fiat's Tychy, Poland factory, which produces the Ford Ka as well as the Fiat 500 and Seicento. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is expected to announce that the next-generation Panda could be built in the carmaker's Pomigliano d'Arco plant, near Naples, southern Italy, if the factory's costs are reduced. At Pomigliano, production costs are several hundred euros higher per unit than in Poland. Marchionne is expected to grant a deal for new production with workers who would agree to reductions and with politicians who would approve incentives to help retool the plant.
