Fiat planning to produce 50,000 cars a year at ex-Bertone plant
Fiat S.p.A. had recently acquired former Carrozzeria Bertone plant in Italy and now plans to produce up to 50,000 cars annually at the factory, according to a trade union member who had attended a meeting in Turin with a company executive.
During the said meeting, Fiat Powertrain Technologies CEO Alfredo Altavilla supposedly said that two models will be made at the factory. The Italian government authorized the sale of Bertone’s contract manufacturing business to Fiat earlier this year. Last September, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that Fiat will produce Chryslers at the plant. However, Marchionne declined to reveal which cars will be built at the plant in Grugliasco, near Turin, or even when production will start. According to a source who spoke with Automotive News Europe, the factory could resume production in late 2011. It is likely that the first model built there will be the replacement for the European version of the Chrysler 300C, which is planned to be launched in the US in early 2011.
