Fiat to introduce its new 900cc, two-cylinder TwinAir unit

Downsizing is the name of the game and Fiat S.p.A. does it best with its introduction of the new 900cc, two-cylinder TwinAir unit, which goes on sale in the Fiat 500 minicar this summer. The 85-hp turbocharged engine will be the only two-cylinder engine to be offered in Europe. Watch out for this engine as it makes its debut at the upcoming Geneva auto show. There is only one other car company that offers a two-cylinder engine Tata Motors. It makes the Nano minicar, which debuted in India last summer and has a 33-hp 623cc engine.
The reason for automakers´ move to remove cylinders and lower the displacement of their engines is to comply with CO2 emissions rules that take effect in Europe in 2012. So far, Fiat has not divulged the TwinAir's official CO2 performance information. From what Fiat has said so far, we know that the 500 minicars sold with the engine will make less than 100 grams per kilometer of the greenhouse gas. The PUR-02 is the greenest version of the 500. It is equipped with a standard stop-start system and currently emits 113g/km. Fiat aims to continue to lead in Europe when it comes to fleet CO2 emissions and this TwinAir engine certainly contributes to this goal. UK-based market researcher JATO Consul said that in the first six months of 2009, Fiat had average CO2 emissions of 129g/km. This is considerably better than Toyota, which had fleet emissions of 132.9g/km during the same period.
