Tesla announced today that the first 1,000 units of the Model S sedan that will enter production in 2012 will be the most expensive version. According to Autonews, the manufacturer will produce about 5,000 cars at its factory in Freemont, California in 2012. Tesla says that the first 1,000 will be the “Signature Series” model, which means that the cars will be able to travel as far as 300 miles on a full charge and will cost from $77,400 before a federal tax credit.

For those who don’t know, the base price for the Tesla Model S with a 160-mile battery is $49,900 after the $7,500 federal tax credit, while the 230-mile range option costs about $10,000 more and the 300-mile option about $20,000 more.

It’s a good business decision: Start with the one that gets you the most revenue,” said Jim Hall, an industry analyst with Michigan-based 2953 Analytics. “Also, if you’re positioning it as a premium product, better to start with the highest-priced model and then work your way down.”
