Previously designated as the R8 GT3, the Audi R8 LMS is a purpose designed car officially approved for the GT3 racing class. Italian Audi Sport received delivery of the first of 12 GT3 sports cars scheduled to be delivered to different teams in the succeeding weeks. The handover of the Audi R8 LMS with chassis number 101 happened last Tuesday.

The manager of Audi Sport Italia, Emilio Radaelli, received the R8 LMS from Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich, Head of Audi Motorsport. There will be five other teams that will compete the V10 behemoth in the upcoming GT3 series including ABT sportline, Argo Racing, ORECA, Phoenix Racing and Team Rosberg. The Audi R8 LMS will get its first taste of the tracks this coming April 4, when it is set to compete in the long distance championship at Nurburgring. The first GT3 competitions will begin on April 10 in Nogaro, France with the French GT Championship. Photo gallery after the jump!
