First Baojun 630 car rolls out of SAIC-GM-Wuling’s plant in Guangxi, China

The first Baojun 630 passenger car recently rolled out of SAIC-GM-Wuling’s manufacturing plant in Liuzhou, Guangxi. SAIC-GM-Wuling, one of GM China's main joint ventures, is relying on the Baojun (its new brand of affordable vehicles to appeal to local car buyers throughout China). Deliveries will start in early 2011 for the Baojun 630, the first model. The Baojun 630 is a compact sedan that was developed locally. It features a highly efficient GM powertrain that complies with local emission standards as well as the advanced Euro IV standard. Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group, said that the market and its customers were carefully studied.
They focused on “quality, design, fuel economy and durability” in order to attract local car buyers, especially first-time buyers in China’s second- and third-tier markets. SGMW General Manager Shen Yang said that the Baojun brand is expected to make SGMW a more competitive automaker as it produces a full lineup of passenger vehicles under the nameplate in the future.
He added that expectations are high for the brand and that its first model, the Baojun 630, will attempt to raise its share in the middle range of the passenger car segment – the fastest growing in the industry. GM’s Global Manufacturing System (GMS) and quality standards were adopted by the Liuzhou facility, which produces the Baojun 630. It has an initial annual capacity of over 100,000 vehicles.
