The production volume for Fisker Automotive’s second line of hybrids won’t enter a high level in Delaware until the middle of 2013, according to company executives. Headquartered in Anaheim, Calif., Fisker had recently gotten regulatory clearance for the sale of its $100,000 Karma sedan. Fisker had also announced a plan to assemble the Nina, its second line, at a Newport-area plant. Plans for the prototypes are expected next year. Fisker has been saying that it will keep its 2,500 workers in Delaware, which include contractors and suppliers.

According to Chief Operating Officer Bernhard Koehler, its estimate for the employment target, a condition of its $21.5 million incentive package from the state, is a “conservative” one. Presently, Fisker has over 120 workers, including contractors, in the plant. Additional electrical and mechanical personnel will be hired to restore equipment that General Motors, the previous owner, had left behind.

Fisker is expecting its Nina production to reach 100,000 units. However, the timeline has not been revealed. Analysts think that this goal may be too high but CEO Henrik Fisker dismissed their concerns, saying it has to be looked at from a different perspective. Fisker noted that the Karma, which could be powered by gas and an electric battery, is unique in the market. He said that the company has defied the analysts at least two times now. Fisker executives had been in Washington and had met with the U.S. Department of Energy, which gave the company the $529 million loan. These executives brought three Karmas with them for test drives. The first batch of Karmas is set to be delivered to its U.S. dealerships, one of which is the Union Park Automotive in Wilmington. [source: DelawareOnline]
