More details have now come in from various sources about what the next big thing is for General Motors – an Omega rear-wheel drive platform that will be used by a flagship Cadillac sedan. What media outlets have previously had their focus on was the XTS -- Cadillac's top-range sedan. But now that it will soon launch, the spotlight is on the new car and chassis. According to GMI, GM appears to be serious about producing a mega-sedan as it is now sourcing suppliers for the Omega program. Many sources say that GM has been starting the processes required to set up a parts supply chain for Omega, particularly the flagship Cadillac sedan.
The news on supplier sourcing supports what GMI revealed last July that the car had been providing tentative approval for production and more exploration. But just because the company is sourcing parts for the program doesn’t automatically mean that this project will push through for sure. Since the sourcing of the Omega program is in its very early stages, stopping it could be done quite easily.
There have been instances in the past when GM changed its mind on new vehicle programs, particularly when it is developing an all-new chassis at the same time. It is estimated that if the Omega program proceeds as planned, the big new Cadillac sedan would only come out in 2015 at the earliest. There’s quite a wait since the simultaneous development of a new chassis and new vehicle takes around four years to complete.
