Ferrari S.p.A. has named Flavio Manzoni to be its new design director. Manzoni succeeds Donato Coco who left last year to become director of design at British sports car maker and engineering consultancy Group Lotus. Manzoni had been Volkswagen AG's head of creative design immediately before he took on Ferrari's offer. One of Manzoni's initial tasks is to strengthen Ferrari's in-house design. This is a marked change from the past four decades wherein the Fiat S.p.A. subsidiary has relied on Italy's Pininfarina S.p.A. to pen its cars. Pininfarina met some financial trouble and now, the design house and contract manufacturer would have to relate with creditor banks have been trying to sell a controlling stake in Pininfarina since December 2008. While Ferrari continues to work with Pininfarina on its new models, the future of the relationship will remain uncertain until Pininfarina has a new owner. [via autonews - sub. required]
