Ford announces third car manufacturing plant in China

2010 Ford Sport TracA groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled this Friday for the third car manufacturing plant in China owned jointly by Ford Motor Co. and its Chinese partner, Chongqing Changan Automobile Co.

It is believed that in China, Ford’s sales may soon outpace its existing capacity. Ford, whose chief rival is General Motors Co., produces the Focus, Mondeo and other sedan models in China in a tie-up with Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. and Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp. An industry source said that the new plant, which will be in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing, will have a production capacity of at least 150,000 units a year. Currently, Ford’s car manufacturing capacity in China is 447,000 units. Ford’s global chief Alan Mulally will attend the groundbreaking. Financial details and further information regarding the new plant have yet to be announced. Ford also holds 30% of Jiangling Motors Corp., which makes light trucks and vans, including Ford’s Transit model.
