Ford sales drop with over 16.3%

Ford sales, during the first six months of 2009, dropped 16.3% compared to the same period last year. June 2009 sales however were up 1.6% compared to June 2008, the first year-on-year increase since December. Ford blames a weak market for the sales slump as well as the lack of freely available credit and rising unemployment in the country. Ingvar Sviggum, Europe's head of marketing, said, "While June was a more positive month, we're still a long way from a sustained and healthy market." Sviggum credits the success it got from scrappage schemes in Germany, France and the UK for cushioning the blow. Ford's 19 main European markets, mostly in Western Europe, recorded a decrease in sales by 90,200 units, an 11% drop. The Ford Fiesta and Ford Ka continue to be its bestsellers, with the Fiesta selling 43,700 units last June (13,100 more than in June 2008) while the latest Ka sold 9,800 units (4,100 more in June 2008).
