Ford to introduce subcompact variants beyond the new Fiesta

Ford Motor Co.'s 2011 Fiesta will go on sale in the US next summer in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles but it is believed that it will soon introduce subcompact variants. Ford claims that these two body styles will account for 600,000 annual units by 2012. But then executives say that the subcompact, or B-car, platform will spin off 1 million annual units in total by that time. That is too large a difference to be ignored.
In an Automotive News report, Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president of global product development declined to provide details except to say, It's a portfolio of B-cars. In Europe and other markets, Ford also sells a three-door hatchback but this can´t explain the discrepancy. Kuzak would not provide specific launch timing or talk about the other variants expected on the B-car platform. More importantly, he wouldn´t say which global markets would receive the additional variants. The Fiesta, which made an appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show, is returning to the US after an absence of almost three full decades. The 2011 Fiesta will go on sale in the US next summer.
