Ford Motor Co. intends to provide EcoBoost engines in 11 vehicles in 2012, an increase from seven in 2011. The automaker also plans to triple the production capacity of EcoBoost-equipped vehicles. The company is counting on its range of turbocharged EcoBoost engines to boost fuel economy benefits without having to sacrifice performance. In North America last year, Ford built 127,883 automobiles with the engine, company spokesperson Richard Truett stated. If that production is tripled, Ford would roll out at least 383,000 units fitted with the engines this year.
The company has recently disclosed that it will bring variants of the EcoBoost engine in the Fusion, Escape, Focus and Interceptor, a model that law enforcement agencies are using. The Fusion mid-sized sedan and the Escape crossover will be all-new for the 2013 model year. The automaker will deliver the new Escape in May while the new Fusion will be offered in late summer or early fall, Truett revealed. The Inceptor and the Focus will be delivered in the second half of this year, he further stated.
Sue Cischke, who is the automaker's group vice president of sustainability, environment and safety engineering, commented that the EcoBoost expansion and availability in high-volume nameplates like the all-new Ford Escape and Fusion will bring the cheap, fuel-saving innovation to "the heart of the market." According to the automaker, it will provide a 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter engine for the Fusion and the Escape, a 3.5-liter V-6 for the Inceptor and a 2.0-liter for the Focus. The company further stated that the 2.0-liter will deliver 237 hp and achieve 25% better fuel economy compared to the outgoing 3.5-liter V-6. Ford did not disclose the specific mpg numbers for the engine. Meanwhile, the 1.6-liter engine will get 26 mpg city/37 highway. Ford anticipates this engine to be the volume leader.
