Ford will choose design for next-gen Mustang from its many studios worldwide

The design for the next generation Mustang will be chosen from the proposals submitted by Ford Motor Co.’s design studios throughout the world. At the Geneva Motor Show, Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president for global product development, said that this process will now be used on each vehicle. Ford’s next-generation pony car would be the first Mustang whose styling themes will be proposed by studios located in Europe, Australia as well as other regions.
In the past, Mustang’s design came only from Ford’s U.S. studio. Kuzak said that when there’s a new product, all the studios will be involved. The best theme will then be picked by J Mays (Ford’s global design chief) and the design team. Three years ago, Ford adopted the global design approach. Kuzak declined to say when the redesigned Mustang is expected to arrive. According to industry sources, the new sports coupe will debut in the 2014 or 2015 model year.
He said that while it’s possible that the chosen styling theme will come from outside the U.S., the studio tasked to build the production vehicle will be the one in Dearborn, Mich. Kuzak asserted that the new Ranger pickup is the latest product that stemmed from the cooperation undertaken by Ford’s studios. Kuzak said further during the interview that the Ranger was developed by the Australian studio along with input from the European studio.
