The 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards will be announced on Jan. 11 and we've learned that two Ford Motor Co. vehicles and two from General Motors Co. are on the short list of finalists. The car finalists are the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Buick LaCrosse and Volkswagen Golf. The Ford Transit Connect, Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Outback round out the six vehicles to make it through the latest round of voting.

The winners, which will be decided by 49 automotive journalists in the United States and Canada, will be announced at the Detroit auto show. Last year's voting had given the Hyundai Genesis the win for car of the year while the Ford F-150 pickup was named the top truck. For the past 16 years, US-based automakers have won the car trophy eight times, European companies have won four times and Japanese won three.

Before Hyundai won last year, no South Korean automaker had even made the finals. In trucks, domestics have won 10 times, followed by four for Japanese makes and two for Europeans. It's interesting to note that hybrids have won four times. For this year, more than 50 vehicles were considered with 16 cars and 10 trucks making the initial ballot. [via autonews]
