Ford’s EcoBoost powerplants receive new transmission

Ford is installing a 'beefed-up' 6-speed SelectShift auto transmission on its impending EcoBoost powerplants to compensate for the extra power. The new transmission, dubbed the '6F55,' will be able to accommodate the higher torque rates of the new bi-turbo 3.5-liter V6. Derived from the same 6-speed transmission in cars such as the Taurus and Sable, it has been optimized to stand under higher operating temperatures connected with a turbocharged powerplant. In order to achieve this, Ford utilized larger transfer and final drive gears, enhanced input and output carriers, and a new differential casing. To enhance driving experience and a more connected sensation, Ford did some durability improvements on the torque converter. A second restrictor boss was added on the MKS and MKT to restrict powertrain movement when accelerating thus lowering the noise factor, harshness and vibration. Currently, it looks like the 6F55 transmission will be solely offered with the latest 3.5-liter EcoBoost powerplant. Before making its way to the latest 2010 Ford Taurus SHO and other EcoBoost vehicles, the transmission will be opened first on the 2010 MKS.
