Ford Motor Co. expects that its January retail sales will slightly drop compared with last year, but despite that, it thinks that total sales would increase by a double-digit percentage due to strong fleet sales, according to George Pipas, Ford's senior sales analyst. Pipas added that Ford's January retail sales will drop 1 to 2% from the year-ago period. Ford reported total sales of 93,041 in January 2008. For the industry in general, Pipas believes that January retail sales will be slightly less than they were a year ago. He attributes this to strong December sales and the cut into January. Specifically, Pipas said that industry total sales for the month are expected to be down 5 to 10% from a year ago. January will be the biggest month for fleet sales increases this year. Pipas predicts that industry fleet sales will increase 40% to 50% compared with a year ago. Pipas said that all three domestic automakers' fleet sales will be up sharper than 40% to 50%. He explained that many commercial and rental businesses had reduced their purchases of new fleet vehicles in this economy.
