The latest parts and gadgets will be used in Vauxhall/Opel’s new three-door city car codenamed ‘Made in Eisenach’. The new city car will overlap on price with the Corsa and is described by the carmaker as “a small-sized fuel-efficient car” that doesn’t “compromise on technology, design or convenience.” The parts will come from the Corsa and Astra and the interior gets a premium feel with sophisticated infotainment systems. About 80,000-90,000 units are expected to be produced annually at Opel’s Eisenach plant, which will be getting a 90 million euro (£79.4m) investment in the facility from General Motors Europe.
Vauxhall/Opel has been looking into the possibility of developing a new city car for some time. Last February, a concept car would be shown at this year’s Paris motor show to preview this city car, which will rival the Ford Ka and Volkswagen Up.
An electric variant was also planned to be a part of the range. The concept car didn’t appear in the Paris show but Vauxhall/Opel had made the announcement last September that production will start in 2013. Back then, Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly said that this plan is a “further milestone in the growth strategy” for its business. [via autocar]
