France to post its strongest year of car sales since 2001

2010 Renault Megane CoupeWith slightly more than 2.25 million cars estimated to have been sold in France in 2009, it is expected that France will post its strongest year of car sales since 2001. French newspaper Les Echos said that car owners have and will continue to take advantage of the government‚ scrapping and other incentive schemes before year-end. It‚ also reported that registrations are up 40%. The increase in sales benefited the French brands the most as they rose 12%, or double the rate of non-French rivals. However, the French newspaper pointed out that the automobile market remains driven by models built in low-cost countries. This means that car-scrapping schemes benefited automakers but gave less of a boost to employment in France. Car sales rose 48.4% in November in France and 7.6% in the first 11 months of 2009, CCFA, the carmakers' association said this month. [via autonews - sub. required]
