Mercedes-Benz is showing its fondness for eco-friendly vehicles at the 2011 IAA in Frankfurt, with its display featuring the F125 Concept and a new E-CELL vehicle based on the fresh B-Class. It is equipped with a range extender – the first electric vehicle from Mercedes to have one. The car has a 100 kW electric motor that comes with a lithium-ion battery. The driver could draw extra power from a 1.0-liter turbocharged engine when necessary.
When the car uses pure electric range, it can be driven by up to 100 km (62 miles) However, the Mercedes Benz B-Class E-CELL Plus Concept actually provides a range of up to 600 Km. It can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 11 seconds and it could attain a maximum speed of 150 Km/h (93 mph).
It comes with a wide range of safety-assist features such as Attention Assis, Blind Spor and Lane Keep Assist, Active Parking Assist, Speed Limit Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Brake Hold and Hill Hold function, Reversing camera and the Pre-Safe system. This is the first time that a vehicle in this class has been given these tech elements.
When a car undergoes production, there is now a new way to do a remote check on the vehicle in a convenient matter or even configure the vehicle remotely and it is through the Vehicle Homepage. The driver can access the vehicle through different ways like using the internet, his PC, or even a smartphone.
It becomes possible to determine the lithium-ion battery’s current charge status or even verify the current range of the vehicle on a map. Another feature is known as smart charging. What this entails is that the customer chooses a desired time to start the journey and the system will then make sure that the battery has a full charge.
There is even the option to turn on the air condition at the time set as well. The many facilities that are being offered by Vehicle Homepage are then rounded-off by additional functions aimed at convenience like the route planner that has been specifically designed for electric vehicles.
In the area of comfort and safety, the B-Class E-CELL Plus Concept continues to meet in every respect the high standard of Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle manages to combine a spacious yet variable interior and compartment for luggage with the compact exterior dimensions.
With five full-size seats, this makes the B-Class E-CELL an all-around electric car not just for family use but even for general motoring and driving. The enhanced driving dynamics and new electromechanical steering give it a more refined sportiness especially in the area of electric mobility.
One striking feature of the B-Class E-CELL is its linear graphic design which is copper-colored and greatly accentuates the vehicle by lending it a dynamic appearance. The interior meanwhile uses double copper-colored lap seams and high-quality nappa leather in black.
When it comes to passive and active safety features, the B-Class E-CELL is more than a match for its siblings. As with all models of Mercedes-Benz’s compact car generation, the B-Class E-CELL comes equipped with the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST.
This is an assistance system that can help drivers avoid future rear-end collisions. The B-Class E‑CELL PLUS also features additional systems that have been adopted from the larger models of Mercedes-Benz in order to keep up with the ongoing safety democratization.
