After yesterday we saw the production version of the Focus ST, Ford decided to reveal today the all-new Fiesta ST Concept, a car that previews the upcoming sporty version of the popular hatchback. Ok, and now the interesting part: the Fiesta ST Concept is powered by a 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost engine delivering 180 hp and 240 Nm of torque, enough to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 7.0 seconds and to a top speed that exceeds 220 km/h or 136 mph.
The 4-cylinder engine is mate to a 6-speed manual transmission and Ford says that the vehicle delivers CO2 emissions lower than 140g/km.
Regarding the design, we do admit that the car looks pretty good, in fact it looks just like a smaller Focus ST. The Fiesta ST comes with an all-new exterior paint colour in Europe, the so-called Molten Orange, same colour found on the North American Ford SVT F-150 Raptor pickup. Although there are no photos with the interior, Ford says that the sporty theme of the exterior is continued inside and we can find Recaro sports seats and a new steering wheel.
Ford's ST models are the carmaker’s most accessible performance vehicles. The ST models combine great performance with refinement that makes it exhilarating to drive and perfect for daily use. These are the focal point of the carmaker’s new performance strategy that provides the blueprint for Ford’s performance cars around the world and possibly the introduction of higher-level performance vehicles.
This new strategy was developed by the Ford Performance Vehicles group, including members from Ford Team RS in Europe and the Special Vehicle Team in North America. The group used its expertise in performance cars to define the right characteristics for all of the carmaker’s future performance vehicles.
The new strategy acts like the human DNA as it dictates all the characteristics that should be seen in a Ford performance vehicles, including how it sounds, how it looks and how it feels to drive it. And while the strategy is more geared towards the possibility of even higher performing models in the future, it is obvious that the ST models play a significant role.
Every Ford vehicle with the ST badge is a performance car that focuses on fun to drive characteristics that customers would love. But it will still retain all the performance characteristics of a Ford. So the driver would just love the experience every time he drives a Ford. Ford ST models also provide a high level of refinement that makes it very enjoyable to drive the car anywhere, from zigzag roads to daily driving.
The ST models will have the same physical characteristics such as the colors, interior design and exterior design, as well as driver-oriented amenities.
On top of the handling characteristics, the DNA also defines the engine output. For the ST models, you can enjoy more power compared to their predecessors. Other elements such as the lateral acceleration and braking also follow the engineering of other similar vehicles in the Ford Performance Vehicles group.
Vehicle characteristics, like the engine’s sound, the steering feel, and the comfortable suspension also follow the rules of the DNA. That means that customers will immediately know they are inside an ST once they are seated in one, regardless of where they are. All future ST models will share this genetic origin that will shape buyers’ expectations. This meticulously defined DNA is important in coming out with performance vehicles that will attract customers from all over the world.
