The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show marks the debut of the Volvo You Concept, which gives the world a look into how the future of Volvo Cars would be like. This follows the earlier launch of the Volvo Universe Concept. Both of these concept cars are being used to gather public opinion to help get the best design for the next big sedan from Volvo.
Volvo Car Corporation president and CEO Stefan Jacoby says that the Volvo You Concept gives us a very good idea of what the next large sedan would look like as it mixes modern Scandinavian design, intuitive technology, and exquisite craftsmanship. All of these would surely attract luxury car buyers the world over.
The Volvo You Concept features a coupé-like look on the outside and a high-tech interior that is both luxurious and driver oriented. The driver is in complete control with the inclusion of the smart pad technology. The luxurious interiors give customers a full experience of the outstanding artistry and technology that will be the signature of future Volvo vehicles.
Feedback from all over the world
Volvo has gathered feedback on the Universe concept using surveys and close monitoring of comments made on social media.
According to Volvo Car Corporation vice president for design Peter Horbury, the carmaker then used the valuable comments to help develop the Volvo You Concept. Hence, compared to the Universe Concept, the You Concept is bolder and has a more coupe-like profile while retaining the carmaker's classic front looks.
Horbury adds that the fastback profile is something the European customers wanted, with growing support from the Chinese market. Horbury says that their goal was to come up with a daring sedan that would easily become a success around the world.
"Cars Designed Around People"
The carmaker's strategy is to have profitable growth by releasing products that meet the needs of customers and fit their lifestyle, no matter where they are in the world.
Jacoby explain that they might be in Sweden, but they have ears and eyes trained worldwide, helping them become the brand that can deliver what modern luxury car buyers want. According to Jacoby, customers' perception of luxury is no longer, what it used to be, and instead now customers increasingly want a mix of elegant design, smart technology, and outstanding craftsmanship.
Pure artisanship and touch-control cockpit
Inside, the Volvo You Concept features top-notch artisanship and a groundbreaking and easy to use smart pad technology.
Horbury explains that the Volvo You Concept is designed and developed to be intuitive. Passengers and drivers would instantly know what to and everything is easy to figure out, making the owner’s manual obsolete. Smart pads and smart phones ushered in a new era in mobile infotainment. The carmaker has made use of touchscreens instead of buttons and controls, giving the interior an uncluttered look while also helping the driver be in total control.
The control centre has four main components: a Driver Information Monitor, a touch-screen located in the upper portion of the center console, a touch-screen between the individual rear seats, and a head-up display located on the windscreen.
