Honda is currently preparing to present the 2012 Honda Insight at the Frankfurt Auto Show. So far, only one image of the facelifted Insight had been released. Honda claims that it has accomplished visual as well as technical improvements.
Honda aimed to raise both the appeal and the efficiency of the vehicle but while it has yet to announce the complete details, we know that its CO2 emissions level has fallen from 105 to 96 grams per km.
The exterior revisions include a redesigned front fascia, which also boasts of enhanced aerodynamics. Honda said that better materials will be used on its interior. It has also been equipped with a climate control system that is made more efficient by using a better thermal isolation.
"The Insight also receives a fresh exterior design including a new front grille. The slimmed tail spolier allows for a wider rear glass area, and combining this with a modified tail gate garnish and a reduction in the size of the wiper motor unit results in overall increased rear visibility.
Adjustments have been made to the engine and suspension for an overall improvement to ride comfort and stability. The features within the interior have also been enhanced for a superior quality." said the press release.
For 2012, the Honda Insight dedicated hybrid vehicle has been revised both outside and inside. Outside, the five-door hybrid now features a more distinctive grille design with a thin, blue accent bar, which marks the car’s identity as a high-tech hybrid. Moreover, the hybrid now sports revised front and rear bumpers as well as other revision underneath – all resulting to a two-percent surge in the car’s aerodynamic performance.
Likewise, the new Honda Insight now features newly designed headlights and brake light internal reflectors. Insight and Insight LX models are provided with new 15-inch wheel covers while the Insight EX is specified with newly styled 15-inch alloy wheels. These wheels are wrapped in wider 185/60R15 tires. Inside, Honda reconfigured the Insight’s rear seat area to allow for enhanced leg and head room. It also redesigned the gauge cluster background to give it a more sophisticated look.
Also, the Japanese carmaker reshaped the center-console beverage holders to accommodate larger drinks. It also provided a more supportive front armrest for Insight LX and EX models. Seats in the Honda Insight LX are wrapped in new, more premium fabric while those in the Insight EX are covered with new synthetic leather and premium fabric. Thanks to a reshaped rear headliner and deeper sculpted seat cushion, headroom in the rear compartment has been increased by 0.6 inches.
In addition, the rear-wiper motor housing has been made more compact and the rear spoiler has been made thinner, thereby improving the hybrid’s rearward visibility. Honda also further thickened the Insight’s noise-insulation materials and installed extra insulation panels in the cargo area to make the hybrid car quieter than before. Customers of Honda Insight EX models may avail of the optional Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition.
This system -- upgraded with the addition of a rearview camera – also offers routing and guidance to addresses and to over seven million points of interest within the United States. It now employs a 16-GB flash memory system, getting rid of the 4.7-GB DVD-based system. Capable of quicker route calculation, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System includes FM traffic service that provides alerts over traffic conditions.
