Chevrolet Volt

It was confirmed by General Motors that beginning June of this year, fully functional Chevrolet Volt prototypes will be produced in the US. Up to this time, the powertrain of the Volt has only been tested in 30 test series using the Chevrolet Cruze. There is a plan by GM to build a total of 80 prototypes at 10 units a week, and be available on the streets by July 2009. GM says that the prototype will be exactly the same as the Volt. Next year will see a step up in the testing of the Volt with GM trying to produce 100 units ahead of the production launch of the vehicle. The model is in several stages of development already and production will be increased by batches. The company is currently fine-tuning each phase in the production process leaving nothing to chance. They are looking forward to a full production of the Volt by November next year. The UK-spec car patterned on the Volt, the Vauxhall Ampera, will be available by 2012 at dealerships. [via autocar]
