As you may know already, yesterday we told you that GM will shut its plant in Antwerp, Belgium due to the fact that it didn’t find any buyer. Today, a news agency reported that China's Geely, owner of Volvo Car Corp is interested in buying the plant. Apparently, Geely owner Li Shufu met local politicians on Wednesday in order to discuss if any incentives would be available for this purchase.
"I would like to look at the possibilities that Antwerp offers," the Belgian news agency Belga quoted Shufu as saying. Currently, the GM plant makes Astra cars, but GM decided that it is better to close this plant in order to make Opel profitable again.
Earlier this week, GM said that it didn’t find any potential investor but it will remain open to any discussions. Its statement added: “During this wind-down period, while the active search of an investor for continuing activities has ended, we will remain open to discuss any reasonable proposals that might be presented to us.” Currently, Volvo has a plant in Ghent, Belgium.
