General Motors ready to get back in business?

General Motors' efforts to promote its new chairman, Edward Whitacre, have been met with much criticism.

It is effective though, since today, Whitacre is much more famous than when he was with AT&T. Many are saying that this attention actually does more harm than good and that it's a waste of money. Some are even claiming that GM's reputation is so tarnished as to be impossible to save.

Meanwhile, it has received comments that it should really just have changed its name. Certainly, it didn't help that the new chairman admits on a TV commercial that he had doubts about GM cars before he joined the company. That he is now sure they are winners really doesn't help much in convincing people of it.

After throwing out Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Pontiac, GM is left with Chevy, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. It might even be a good idea for its remaining segments to distance themselves from GM.

At the very least, GM should spend its money wisely by promoting Chevy, Cadillac, Buick and GMC instead of the corporation or its chairman.
