General Motors strives to get its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in production by 2012. This was included in GM's recent announcements about its future product plans. Alan Taub, GM's executive director of research and development, said that currently, only GM and Honda have hydrogen fuel cell vehicles but that these are test and low-volume production vehicles. He touted technology leadership as one of the pillars of the company. Already, GM has reduced both the size and cost of its fuel cell stack. Taub added that GM has yet to make the fuel cell stack cost-competitive as it costs 30% more than the upcoming powertrain of the Chevy Volt. Aside from these details, Taub did not elaborate on what vehicle would be getting the fuel cell and what would be its other specifications.
