While the external search for a new CEO for Opel/Vauxhall Europe is ongoing, Nick Reilly, GM executive vice president and president, GM International Operations, will be responsible for the operations. Carl-Peter Forster had quit last Friday after GM had overturned a decision to sell Opel/Vauxhall unit to Canadian supplier Magna International Inc. and its Russian partner Sberbank. Reilly, a 59-year-old British native, is a former managing director of Vauxhall in the UK and current head of GM’s international operations. He maintains overall direction of GM’s international operations based in Shanghai, China.

While Reilly serves in Europe, the day-to-day operations of the various international subsidiaries in his organization will be handled by the respective country managing directors.

In a statement, GM CEO Fritz Henderson, said that Reilly, who has had a “deep experience” with the Opel and Vauxhall brands, is “well suited to lead this transition and to work toward the earliest possible normalization of the business.”

To help out in the transition is Hans Demant, Opel’s managing director who retains his position in leading Opel’s management board. Meanwhile, Bob Lutz, GM’s top marketing boss, will chair Opel’s supervisory board and help steer a restructuring plan at the carmaker.
