2011 Geneva Motor Show: ABT R8 GT S based on Audi R8 Spyder

Article by Christian A., on March 1, 2011

In a red chrome tone, the Spyder ABT R8 GT S is truly a sight to behold at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. A contrast is offered by the middle section of the car with extensive use of carbon seen from the bonnet to the rear wing.

When the car was being designed, the Motorsport Department of ABT Sportsline focused on weight reductions and the perfect distribution of weight.

The cabrio is clearly one of the fastest existing vehicles as it has dynamic carbon inlays at the side and on the covers of engine and convertible-top. The front skirt, rear skirt, windscreen frame cover, red air scoops, engine bonnet or even the mirrors are not just design.

They are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CRP) and are light. The sports car is the optimum weight to attain its highest performance.

Because of ABT Power, the car now has an output of 620 HP (456 kW). In comparison, the standard models deliver 525 HP (386 kW). Its performance has been boosted by nearly 20%. The ABT R8 GT S is able to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and it can reach a top speed of 320 km/h.

The cabrio with the 5.2 litre V10 engine is perfect for daily use. Basically, the "hot open-top sports car" can be used for any purpose. With the ABT Suspension, the setup is optimal at all times. The Sports exhaust system offers good acoustics and is a vital part of the design concept.

It harmonizes with the diffuser, rear wing and trapeze-shaped rear skirt. Aside from being very fast, the car also looks the part especially with its light metal alloy ABT BR in 20 or the CR Superlight in 19 inch.

ABT R8 GT S - Audi R8 Spyder

Red is the colour of love. And the new Spyder ABT R8 GT S presents itself at the Geneva auto show in red chrome, contrasted by the middle segment: From its bonnet to the rear wing carbon dominates. The visually dynamic appearance has a reason. The ABT Sportsline motorsports department has focused upon weight reduction and a perfect weight distribution when designing this open super sports car.

The result is a top-of-the-line convertible: The R8 GT S signals that it is among the fastest cars there are, starting with the carbon inlays at the flanks and the engine and the soft-top cover. Front apron, rear apron, window frame covering, red air hoods, bonnet or exterior mirrors are not only design elements but also made of carbon fibres. They are thus very light. This sports car has the ideal weight for a top performance.

Thanks to ABT POWER, this dream car now has 620 hp (456 kW). The serial model has 525 hp (386 kW). This is an extra of almost 20 per cent, and the ABT R8 GT S is thus able to sprint from naught to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. The specially developed air hoods always see to the right climate in the engine. The convertible with its 5.2-Liter-V10 is fully feasible, of course, and cruising on country roads is real fun. And thanks to the ABT chassis, ideal conditions obtain in all situations. The sport exhaust system makes for a good sound and additional performance and is also a major part of the design concept. It is fully in line with the diffuser, rear wing and the trapezoid rear apron. The car isn’t only extremely fast, it also looks as if it were, especially when the ABT BR light alloy wheel in 20 inches or the CR in 19 inches signals speed from the outset.

The love for details is also reflected inside: ABT Sportsline has developed a red carbon-fibre steering wheel and the centre console, the gearbox and parts of the door covering are also “dressed” in red exposed carbon. This is contrasted by the remaining parts of the doors and the dash panel. Both have been newly clad in leather by ABT. This elegant material’s texture is very expressive. The red-black leather of the sport seats form a perfect combination with the above. Red safety belts and illuminated door ledges complete this sports convertible’s look.
