Opel announced today that, in March, at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show it will unveil the new Zafira Tourer Concept, a preview of the next-generation Zafira. As you can see from the photos, the new car carries the same design line seen on the Ampera a.k.a. sister model of the Chevrolet Volt, and promises to offer a spacious and sophisticated lounge-style interior embraced by an elegant, sculptured and dynamic exterior.
The car will feature a completely new wing shaped headlamp that creates a very dynamic look. Moreover, the new Zafira Tourer Concept brings Insignia ambition, quality and innovative technologies and according to the German manufacturer it is designed to ensure that every journey is pleasant, safe and relaxing for all aboard.
The Zafira Tourer Concept features an evolved version of the seven-seat Flex7 seating concept. For this usage, the third row could now be completely folded down flush with the floor. Moreover, the Concept’s five-seat interior could be transformed into a four-seat cabin with just a push of a button.
This transforms the cabin into a more spacious interior with a lounge character and first-class impression. The concept has a new folding mechanism that enables the back of the second row’s middle seat to provide armrests for the passengers in the outer seats.
These armrests then slide back and towards each other to provide optimal space for passengers' arms and legs. Likewise, the cabin features extended footrests, thereby providing an ideal seating position for relaxation.
Moreover, the interior of the Zafira Tourer Concept – featuring dark brown and caramel color tones -- is equipped with electrically powered tiltable three-piece headrests, which remain in a vertical position for the driver while the car is in motion for safety reasons.
All headrests – aside from that of the driver -- swivel 90 degrees to the horizontal position in the lounge setting, with the outer elements slightly curving forward. The front row is marked by a center console featuring a large touch-screen display.
Above it is a covered storage compartment that could accommodate a tablet PC. Moreover, the driver and the front passenger could control heating through the two turn knobs located below the display while the air conditioning is adjusted through touch buttons.
Interestingly, the concept comes with pivot-mounted tablet PCs on the front seat backs, allowing passengers in the second row to comfortably surf the internet or control multi-media applications. Its seats are wrapped in high-quality caramel leather featuring color-matched quilted seams and stitching.
Contrasting these seats are door trim in cocoa dark brown and soft deep-pile carpet as well as an array of pleasant-to-touch premium materials. On the other hand, the concept’s sculptured exterior is wrapped in Frost Liquid Metal -- a special metallic silver-grey – with its front fascia marked by a new unique front with wing-shaped headlamps as well as twin trapezoid grille intakes.
Protecting the wing-shaped LED daytime running lights, bi-Xenon AFL and fog lamps is a single plexiglass cover. Its fog lamps are bordered by a polished aluminum frame and gleams in blue juts like a frosted acrylic block.
All of these features result to a visually shorter front overhang. Of course, the Zafira Tourer Concept is endowed with the distinctive Opel center crease on the hood that stretches from the grille to the windshield.
