Mercedes-Benz revealed today the brand new 2011 S63 AMG, the latest generation of the sports sedan which was previewed at this year's Geneva Motor Show. As you expected, the new car receives the new 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine, dubbed internally as the M157, which replaces the old AMG 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine with a displacement of 6208 cc.
The engine delivers an impressive 400 kW (544 hp) and maximum torque of 800 Nm, but for those who want more, AMG offers the Performance package which increases the numbers to 420 kW (571 hp) and 900 Nm.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the new engine has an NEDC fuel consumption of only 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres, which means it is with 3.9 litres more economical than the previous model powered by the naturally aspirated AMG 6.3-litre V8, despite the fact that the new engine is more powerful (with 14 kW or 19 hp).
Also, the CO2 emissions have been significantly reduced at 244 grams per kilometre, with almost 30 percent lower than for the previous model. Now don't think that the new car will be slower because it is now, in fact it can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
With the AMG Performance Package installed the car can hit 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and the top speed is limited to 300 km/h (187 mph). The impressive amount of power is transferred from the engine to the wheels with the help of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission used exclusively by AMG, which is already familiar from the SL 63 AMG and E 63 AMG.
The new car also features a fuel efficient standard start/stop function which switches the eight-cylinder engine off when the car comes to a stop.
The eight-cylinder biturbo engine also features the generator management system familiar from the E 63 AMG, which means the kinetic energy is used to charge the battery rather than being wasted as heat in the usual way.
Just like the new 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG & CL65 AMG, the 2011 S63 AMG comes withActive Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist safety systems.
Exclusive optional extras are also available for the S 63 AMG from the AMG Performance Studio: AMG Performance package: increase in maximum power of 20 kW (27 hp) and maximum torque of 100 Nm, genuine carbon fibre AMG engine cover; AMG double-spoke forged wheels, painted in black with a mirror finish and fitted with 255/35 R 20 front and 275/35 R 20 rear tyres; AMG Performance steering wheel with Alcantara inserts in the grip areas; AMG trim in black piano lacquer/carbon fibre.
