2012 Geneva Motor Show Preview: 2012 Kia Cee’d makes its debut

Article by Christian A., on January 10, 2012

Kia revealed today the first image with the 2012 Cee’d ahead of the car’s debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, in March. According to the Korean manufacturer, the new Kia Cee’d combines styling typically found on a sporty coupé with the space and functionality of a five-door hatch. The first visual impact with the 2012 Cee’d shows a new front grille, restyled headlights featuring daytime running LEDs but also new fog lights.

After its debut, the new Cee’d will be available across Europe from the second quarter of 2012.

New Kia cee'd is lower and longer than the previous model. This helps the hatchback gain a more athletic profile. The cee’d is now 50 millimeters longer and 10 millimeters shorter. It has a 2,650-millimeter wheelbase, which is among the longest in the C-segment.

The sportier look is enhanced by having a wider track. The body shell is narrower by 10 millimeters but the front track is wider by 17 millimeters while the rear track is wider by 32 millimeters. You can choose between 17 and 18 inch alloy wheels, which leave only a minimal gap between the body and the tires.

The sleek side profile is the result of exhaustive testing using the top of the line wind tunnel at the South Korean automaker's research and development center in Namyang, Korea. A sharper windscreen angle, meticulously designed rear lamp clusters, and smooth covers under the central floor and under the engine bay, as well as placing a rear spoiler just above the tailgate help lower the drag, giving the cee’d a 0.30 Cd rating. It also helps minimize cabin noise and improves fuel consumption.

New cee’d is going to be manufactured only at the company’s Zilina, Slovakia facility. It will offer 10 exterior color choices, and five of these will be new. The cee’d is going to be one of those models that would have the new Kia badge, which is sleeker and simpler than the previous badge. The modern badge design also gives the car a more premium feel.

Powertrain

The carmaker’s team of engineers wanted a new car that would lower both emissions and fuel use, while also maintaining performance and engine response. The engines have been updated to improve the fuel efficiency by an average of 4% for the entire line.

Depending on the market, the new Kia will offer a wide selection of engines with a range of 90 ps to 135 ps. In most Western Europe markets, customers can choose between two petrol engines -- a 1.6 GDI and a 1.4 MPI engine that gives you 135 ps and 100 ps of power, respectively.

On top of these, you can also choose from a 1.4 WGT 90 ps engine or a 1.6 VGT engine that can deliver either 110 or 128 ps of output. Some European markets will also have the 1.6 MPI petrol engine that produces 130 ps of power.

Kia expects that its 1.6-L variable geometry turbo model will be the most popular in almost all markets. This engine gives torque of 260 Nm and 128 ps of power. This may be paired with six-speed automatic or manual transmissions.

You can go from standstill to 100 kph in 11 seconds and you can drive for 100 km using only 4.1 liters of fuel. That fuel efficiency is improved with the inclusion of the EcoDynamics technologies that boosts fuel efficiency to 3.7 liters for every 100 km. Carbon dioxide emissions can go as low as 97 grams per kilometer.
