Just in time for the summer and for the Geneva Motor Show, Audi has just unveiled the 2014 S3 Cabriolet, an open-top four-seater that promises to be the king in its segment. Just like the S3 sedan, S3 sportback and that S3 coupe versions, the S3 Cabriolet is powered by the 2.0 TFSI engine that generates an impressive 300 hp (221 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque.
Bolted to the S Tronic transmission and using the permanent Quattro all-wheel drive, the S3 Cabriolet accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph. According to Audi, the S3 Cabriolet weighs 1,620 kilograms (3,571.49 lb) when empty (without the driver).
Moreover, the S3 Cabriolet has a fuel consumption (with the S Tronic) of just 7.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (33.13 US mpg) (165 grams of CO2 per kilometer [265.54 g/mile]). Audi S3 Cabriolet is 4.43 meters (14.53 ft) long, has a wheelbase of 2.60 meters (8.53 ft), and is 1.79 meters (5.87 ft) wide and 1.39 meters (4.56 ft) tall. As you can see from the photos, the car is fitted with a soft top with an electrohydraulic driver.
Available in three colors, the soft top opens or closes in 18 seconds and at speeds up to 50 km/h or 31 mph. An active rollover system protects passengers in the event of an accident. The design is not new and there is nothing surprising: we find the same hiqh-quality features seen on the S3 sedan and S3 hatchback, as well as the 180inch aluminum wheels in five-parallel-spoke design with a machine-polished silver finish.
Audi offers as an option 18- or 19-inch wheels in various design. Behind these wheels we find the brake discs that have 340 millimeters (13.39 in) in diameter as well as the black – or optionally red – calipers emblazoned with S3 logos. The electromechanical parking brake is integrated into the rear brake system. Inside there is plenty of room for up to four adults and a 285 liter (10.06 cubic ft) luggage compartment that can be expanded by folding down the rear seat backs; its volume is 245 liters (8.65 cubic ft) when the top is down.
Fine details emphasize the dynamic character of the open-top four-seater. There are instrument dials in S-specific dark gray metallic and white digits and needles, a three-dimensional logo and a boost pressure indicator, a standard color driver information system, a power-retractable on-board monitor offered as standard with the MMI radio as well as the sport seats with embossed S3 logos.
Combinations of Alcantara and Pearl Nappa leather or Fine Nappa leather and Velvet leather are available as options. Bang & Olufsen Sound System ups the ante with 13 speakers, for those who want even more. Pricing, in Germany, starts at 48,500 euros. [source: Audi]
