BMW bringing the M Performance Parts to the 2012 Geneva Motor Show

Article by Christian A., on February 19, 2012

A range of Original BMW Accessories for the new 3 Series Sedan will be launched at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show. For the exterior, the options include a set of one-of-a-kind 20 inch wheels and a fitted indoor/outdoor car cover. In keeping with the new Sport, Modern or Luxury Lines, the new 3 Series Sedan interior may be customized with items like the high-quality all weather floor mats, color-matched emergency brake handle, key fobs, rear storage and backrest bags. Any authorized BMW center offers and installs these Original BMW Accessories.

A lockable roof box and a snowboard holder are perfect for those going on longer trips. In addition, the Geneva show marks the premiere of the new accessory division for BMW vehicles: BMW M Performance Parts. The BMW M Performance Parts are the products of a close partnership with BMW M GmbH.

These include powertrain, suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit components that offer a significant increase in driving dynamics by improving engine power, cutting weight and optimizing aerodynamic properties.

The initial BMW M Performance products were specially developed for the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and the new 1 Series (5-door model). These products include black kidney grills, M Performance exhaust systems, carbon fiber front splitters and an M Performance steering. The BMW M Performance Parts will start to come out in the U.S. starting this summer.

When viewed at the side, the BMW 3-Series Sedan reveals that it has a wedge shape. In addition, one is likely to notice that the track has been made wider with an additional 37 mm on the front with an extra 47 mm at the rear. With these two qualities combined, the result is that it highlights the new model’s athletic look. The significance of highlighting the width is that the front section, with its multi-faceted surfaces, gives a look that is sportier than ever.

On the front itself, the kidney grille which was initially slanted a bit forward and placed upright now has a squat and wide position. This allows it to underscore the stance of BMW’s latest offering. Customers who opt to have the xenon headlights will get LED accent lights placed on top of the headlights and corona rings.

It gives it that eyebrow-like appearance and intensifies further the brand’s well-known focused look. Proceeding to the headlights, they now go beyond the kidney grille’s frame. As such, the grille and the headlights combine resulting in one unit helping put that needed focus on the broad-set stance.

For BMW, the 3-Series Sedan plays an important role in its history as it is considered the first compact sports sedan. Over time, it has represented what the brand means when it comes to sporting capability, dynamics, and visual appeal. The newest addition to the 3-Series range is the sixth generation, which is expected to have all of the BMW’s mid-size model’s sporting qualities.

Despite being made longer, wider, and even taller, it still has that good mix of elegance and sportiness people have grown to love in the previous versions. That said, there is no doubt that the dynamic proportions are the result of having a long wheelbase and short overhangs in the front, set-back greenhouse expected from the brand, and the sweeping bonnet.

One significant change the brand implemented for the new 3-Series is that there are now two large air intakes instead of a single central air intake. The new intakes have been placed just beyond the front end and below the headlights.

This gives that added depth to the already sporty styling of the model. On both sides of the main ducts, small vertical air intakes have been placed to deliver that Air Curtain feature. With this, the air flow on the front wheels of the new 3-Series is enhanced while ensuring that aerodynamic efficiency is improved and fuel consumption is lowered especially at high speeds.
