Morgan Motor to revive Plus 8 at 2012 Geneva Motor Show

Article by Anita Panait, on February 6, 2012

Morgan Motor Co. will revive its Morgan Plus 8 vehicle as a new and full -ledged model at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Morgan will display two versions of the Plus 8: a production variant that runs with BMW’s 4.8-litre normally aspirated V8; and a prototype sports car labeled ‘Plus-e.’ The production Plus 8 will be presented at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show along with the company’s all-aluminum ‘Aero’-series flagship vehicles, and the six-cylinder Morgan Roadster.

The production Plus 8 uses a bonded and riveted aluminum chassis, instead of the galvanized steel ladder chassis that carries the Roadster and Plus 4. The production Plus 8 has slightly smaller proportions than the Aero Supersports, with a curb weight of around 1100kg without fluids.

Described by Morgan as its ‘most comfortable classic model,’ the Plus 8 featured a leather upholstered cockpit, a high quality audio system and a double-lined convertible roof.  The Plus 8 is powered by a V8 engine with up to 390bhp in output with manual transmission as standard.

A buyer, however, could choose to install a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Both transmissions allow the Plus 8 to accelerate to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds.  If the buyer wants to save on gas, he should choose the Plus 8 with automatic gearbox, as it could return 26 mpg on the combined cycle.

As for the Plus-e, the company is still developing the electric sports car for production “as soon as possible,” according to Morgan chief designer Matt Humphries. Although Morgan has yet to release specs of the Plus-e, Humphries described it as a working car with a usable range.

“You just charge it up and go for a blast,” Humphries remarked. Morgan will also unveil at the Geneva Motor Show a closed cockpit version of the Aero Supersports, which it labeled Aero Coupe, and a modified version of the Roadster that runs on Ford’s 3.7-litre, 260bhp Mustang V6.
