Geneva Preview: 2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Showcar

Prior to the Geneva Motor Show, AMG is writing another chapter in its "AMG Performance 2015" drive system strategy and revealed its newly developed 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a peak output of up to 420 kW (544 to 571 hp) and maximum torque of up to 900 Nm. Dubbed M 157, the new V8 engine will be introduced in Summer 2010 and comes with new technologies such as direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion and twin turbochargers (the current engines are all naturally-aspirated).
With the new engine installed the S63 AMG has a fuel consumption of just 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined consumption, provisional figure), which means that the car saves 25% of fuel compared to the current S63 AMG. The 5.5-litre V8 is mated to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and includes a new start/stop function in the "Controlled Efficiency" driving mode. With the new engine installed, the car can spring from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.
With the new AMG Performance package installed the performances of the car are increased: 4.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and a top speed electronically limited to 300 km/h. The S63 AMG showcar is a tribute to the legendary 300 SEL 6.8 AMG that won a class victory and second place in the overall ranking for AMG at the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) in 1971 -- and made the company world-famous overnight.
