Detlef Wittig, Volkswagen AG's, sales chief, anticipates a sharp drop in Germany's car sales when the government's car scrappage program ends. In fact, Wittig predicts Germany's car sales will fall below 3 million units in 2010 from 3.7 million this year. Because of the government incentives, the first 9 months of 2009 experienced a 26.1% increase in new car sales to just under 3 million units when compared to the previous year. The scheme, which offered car buyers 2.500 euros to trade in their old cars for newer and more fuel-efficient models, contributed much to this figure. The scheme lasted from February until September. Wittig said VW is optimistic about its sales in the third quarter. Definitely, it's better than expected. He also suggested that VW digest its deal with Porsche before considering other acquisitions.
