General Motors CEO Dan Akerson, in his regular meeting with employees last week, urged them to welcome change, work with integrity, and hasten the transformation of its culture. He informed employees that he aims to get GM to focus more on brands and customers and to position it better to still be around during at least the next 50 or 100 years. In addition, he condemned several leaks to the media that occurred recently. Akerson talked to employees via a conference call last Thursday. He asked them to be leaders and to go beyond the traditional “fiefdoms” and bureaucracy that the company has been struggling with for years. He said that he is hoping to build the company so that it will be perceived as the lion of the industry when the decade ends and in the years to come. Akerson, who marks his two years as the CEO of GM on Sept. 1, urged employees to be loyal. He also warned them that they should work elsewhere if they can’t follow the rules. He said that the company has the right to expect that its workers will act with integrity and that if they fail, the company won’t tolerate it. Nevertheless, Akerson complimented the workers at the Lordstown, Ohio plant for being proactive in fixing defects as soon as they detected them.
