GM developing new windshield capable to outline the edges of roads

General Motors revealed today the fact that it is currently developing a windshield display system designed to outline the edges of roads in the fog. What is really interesting about this windshield is that it will highlight a deer before it crosses into traffic. How is that? Apparently, the system collects information through vehicle sensors and cameras and projecting laser-generated images onto the windshield. And this is not all, because the system can also highlight road signs and tell drivers when construction is coming or even when the desired exit is approaching.

The bad news is that GM has currently no plans to use this windshield in any vehicles but it might be used in upcoming models. "We have done testing on a number of drivers and their performance is better relative to head-down systems that are commonly used in vehicles today," said Thomas Seder, group lab manager for GM R&D, in a statement.

"This design is superior to traditional head down display-based night vision systems, which require a user to read information from a traditional display, create a mental model and imagine the threat's precise location in space," Seder said. "We have done testing on a number of drivers and their performance is better relative to head-down systems that are commonly used in vehicles today," said the same Seder. "It's a compelling design."
