General Motors Co. has appointed its global product development chief, Mary Barra, to the supervisory board of its Opel unit. Barra will the third top GM executive in as many months to be posted at Opel, after GM Chief Financial Officer Daniel Ammann and Timothy Lee, president of GM International Operations. Presiding over Opel’s board is another GM top executive, Steve Girsky. Barra will be replacing GM executive Walter Borst on the Opel board.

The four GM executives along with Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke are assigned to draft a turnaround plan for the loss-making unit.

Opel’s board also appointed union chief Wolfgang Schaefer-Klug as a replacement for the vice-chairman post left open by the retirement of union chief Klaus Franz. The changes on the board will take effect February 1. “Both shareholder representatives and employee representatives on the supervisory board are in agreement that Opel has to become profitable, even in times of tough economic headwinds,” Opel said in a statement.
